My dream is to be the owner and run my own bakery, that offers baked goods, cakes, and wedding cakes. There are many fields that I feel I will have to take on to make my dream a reality. Including Owner, Manager, and Baker. Each of these area's will requires me to know different things like store sales and licensing, who the customers are and what they like and lastly how to bake and decorate in a way it will keep the customers coming back. For this blog, I will focus on the Management field.
Like regular managers, a baker manager is required to know the normal ins and outs of management and a required 3 years of experience in the bakery department (Bakery Manager,. 2016). Baker managers are in charge over overseeing, direct and manage all employees. Each business requires certain things from their managers that are different in each business. Bakery managers usually make around $11.62 an hour and by 2024 is expected to grow by 7% (Bakers,. n.d.). Managers are expected to hire, train and fire employees as needed, know the inventory and what needs to be ordered, prices and sales, and laws and regulations.
Working one’s way up from just an employee at a bakery to a bakery manager has many steps and lessons to be learned. A baker manager usually starts out taking orders and ringing customers up at the register. Employees who do well and show interest can work their way into the kitchen where they will likely be doing dishes and do a minimal amount of baking. Most bakery’s like their employees to have a degree in culinary arts or pastry arts. Taking classes to obtain an associate’s degree and continuing to work at the bakery learning hands on are the nest steps to be taken to become a baker manager.
Once an employee has their associates degree they can then apply for the position of baker. After a while, the employee may be moved up to assistant manager where they are expected to continue their normal duties at the bakery as well as take on more serious duties performed by a manager (Lunds and Byerlys, n.d.). Bakers can also earn certification, of four levels. The highest level being Master baker requiring eight years of experience and 30 hours each of profession development training and sanitation coursework (Becoming a Bakery Manager,. n.d.). Once the employee has shown they know the business well enough to run it on their own they may be promoted to bakery manager.
Companies like to promote from within their business rather than going through the hiring process to find someone for the position. Because of this most candidate find out about the available position through word of mouth. It is less expensive for businesses to recruit employees from within because posting job position, interviewing, hiring and training new employees is costly. This is not the only way employees are recruited, many bakeries’s still use online job listing sites such as Indeeed.com to recruit employees. Companies can use tools such as social media and LinkedIn to help find candidates and post open positions, both options are free and convenient (Overell, 2012). Companies can do background checks and social media to help wean out candidates that would not work out.
There are many positions available in the within a bakery and the availability to move up in the business. Bakery managers like many other managers have many duties and are required to train, direct and oversee employee’s daily activities. There are many ways for businesses to recruit employees and save the business time and money.
